working hard or hardly working?

Slow day at the office. I basically spent my morning surfing the world wide web while listening to 94.9 and pretending that i was being useful. So far i have gone around the office taking pictures of everyone on what does EHDD mean to them and opened up a new google account and imported all my mails to this account... i hope no one at work reads this. I was super late this morning to work also. woke up at 7:48, 48 minutes later than when i was suppose. Didnt even get a chance to shower and just left the house to catch the bus which was 10 minutes late. I had to make up some WHITE lie to my supervisor about some Bart hold up. she bought it. I will be going to the shop in a bit to do some more work thats pretty much unnecessary, but on Friday i get to go to the Exploratorium for FREE and meet the consultants there to discuss moving the tactile dome to the new location. im excited, but i wish i didn't have work on Friday. and next week apparently i have a design review, which means i will have to present my ideas of this CA wall to two people. yay mini review.... i hope i dont suck. i should go before i start to look too suspicious for writing an essay on the internet

to search or not to search

today in my language and power class we started talking about Foucault's critic of the American prison system that began in Philadelphia. He believed that the observation nature of the penitentiary led to information gathering and surveillance of people. While the intent of the observation tower was to better understand the prisoners so they could be re-educated more effectively, this information could also be considered an invasion of privacy. This practice reminds me of the google commercial during the superbowl. While most people applauded its originality and "awhh" factor, it's also kinda frightening to think how much your searches can reveal your life. Google has admitted that it keeps a record of all the searches and their corresponding IP address, but it says that this information is currently used to improve their search result. However, there are rumors that google has granted access to federal government to these search results in convicting terrorists. If you really think about what you type into the little google search bar, the information is probably a lot more revealing and indicative. I dont really know where im going with my theory, but i guess its just scary to think about how much we are willing to reveal about ourselves to the internet unconsciously...

EHDD day 3

Today I had lunch with my mentor at this place called universal cafe. I got this flatbread with goat cheese and tomato sauce on it which was essentially a really crunchy pizza. It was really good and was paid by EHDD which made it even better. I also got a dessert called strawberry pomegranate granati (i think) which had this shave ice thing on top of home made whipped cream with two shortbread cookie on the side. it was definitely the best part of my day. But it was kinda awkward when the waitress brought it out with two spoon assuming that me and my mentor are sharing it...

Conversation wise, he talked to me about his experience with the profession which is actually in its beginning stage also. He told me he went to University of Michigan for both undergrad and grad school and is very satisfied with working at EHDD. I asked him questions regarding the work field, he asked me questions about berkeley architecture program. nothing really stood out as a memorable topic but i was slightly shocked at how comfortable and happy he is at where he is in life. and that got me doubting if i will EVER be this happy with what i do. I am doing design because i like it and i'm good at it, but i will never be content with working as a standard architect at a good firm. I want to do projects without a budget and i want people to recognize my buildings, to study them, to be inspired by them.

I spent the rest of the day making a presentation on the"product of the week" which is Terrawalk, a rubber sidewalk material made from recycled tire. Everyone great architect in history has sat where i sat today RIGHT? Mr. Clooney said so.

i wake up at 7 am and leave the firm at 6 pm.

16th mission is actually a pretty dope place. a lot of studio space converted from factories and a lot of surprises like this.

this is a new installation for the london heathrow airport called CLOUD by troika, its pretty funky. i like how it changes between sad, dark cloud to a party disco ball but i think it would be more poetic and less robotic if the shape weren't so flat and symmetric.

So i started my internship at EHDD last friday and it was a bittersweet experience so far. While i am extremely grateful that i have lucked out for once in my life by getting a good firm, the practice field of architecture has made me terrified of graduating. On last friday i met everyone at the firm and got a quick tour, then i had lunch with the intern coordinators, and in the afternoon i worked on a transportation map and organizing construction documents. This wednesday, i spent half of the day rhinoing the support system of an "ecosystem" signage and the other half renderings three different color schemes for an entrance way. I spend about an hour and half commuting every time, and during those long bart rides i cant help but let my mind wander. I used to be excited to start working, to show the world what i can do, to apply the things i have learned in school, and to find an outlet for all my adolescent angst. But the reality is never the same as dreams. At the end of the wednesday, when i walked five blocks to the bart stop, i cant help but felt empty inside. Unlike school, work is confined and broken. You do things according to other people's schedule without really knowing where the finish line is. You work because it's your job.
I know im starting to sound pessimitic and negative, but what im trying to saying to say is that people shouldnt always live for the future. I shouldn't always live through my plans, because as sad as it is to say, plans never come true. and when they fail, I make another plan. This is wrong. I've been wrong. And that was the most valuable thing i have learned from my internship so far.

I've been wanting to post this video I saw a long ago. It is a sick short movie showcasing three promising graffiti artists in Shanghai. It's interesting that the art of tagging is spreading into Asian countries like China and taking a slightly different role. If you watch the video, its ironic that the country with the lesser amount of political freedom allows more artistic expression. This may be due to the fact that the nature the pieces seem to center more on the celebration of Chinese culture instead of critiques on the society (often seen in Western graffiti).

I saw this lamp when i visited the ny moma over winter break. The user can take the included chisel and crack open the "egg" to reveal the light within.
